Satidevi Movie Story

Satidevi (Malika Mahat) lives in a tiny village with his family and spends his days performing home duties. She has many difficulties in life since her father, Kul Bahadur Maila (Kul Bahadur Adhikari), is an elderly traditionalist. She cannot attend school since her father does not allow her to study. She manages the household, cares for the animals, and looks after her siblings. Her mother is pregnant because his father desires a boy in the family.

Kul Bahadur is a middle-class guy with enough property to live on, but his poor habits of gambling and drinking undermine his family’s status. He takes credit for gambling from Kaudi Kaji and his buddies but fails to repay. He does not bring calm to the household; instead, he hits his wife and children.

Kul loses all of his money in gaming, including his wife’s jewelry, and he is starving for money. Because he is unable to repay, he desires to sell his land and repay the debt. On the other hand, his wife is in labor and giving birth to a kid. While Kul is away for personal reasons, his wife gives birth to a baby daughter. As a mother, she is neither thrilled nor saddened since her husband desires a boy. This one incident alters their lives forever.

Satidevi Movie Cast & Performance

Malika Mahat plays the principal role of Satidevi in the film. Sati is a straightforward and honest character in the film. She constantly respects his family and follows their beliefs rather than pursuing her own. She abandons her ambitions of being an educated member of the family. She undertakes family duties, goes to the forest to get food for cattle, and spends her leisure time with her close friends and siblings.

Malika did her best to bring the character to life in the film. As a viewer, we sympathize with her character as she goes through a lot of agony and suffering. She nicely represents a simple and respectable peasant girl. However, her persona lacks powerful discourse and anecdotes to engage the viewer.

Kul Bahadur Adhikari portrays another important character, Kul, in the film. Kul is a tough figure who constantly disrupts his family and society. He develops the habit of drinking alcohol and gambling with his rural mates. His terrible behavior hurts his wife and children. If he loses, he will severely punish his wife and children.

Mr. Adhikari has delivered an outstanding performance while playing the role of a bad parent. He understands his character in the context of the image. His grief from losing the gamble and not having a son in the family is depicted so vividly. As we interact with this figure, we feel both indignant and empathetic. Mr. Kul Bahadur’s performance is noteworthy in the film.

Direction & Story Telling

Laxman Subedi, the writer/director of Satidevi, delivers a basic yet typical narrative of a small community in Nepal. He understands his father’s suffering, as he longs for a son. Living in a patriarchal culture, the norms and heights of societal ideals destroy happiness and family bonds in an instant. The filmmaker attempts to convey one of the most pressing concerns facing the Nepalese community, but falls short of crafting a great script. Despite having a decent idea, the film feels weak and lacks conflict as the tale unfolds.

In terms of character, just a handful are adequately molded, while others are not, making the movie’s flow feel uninteresting. Malika and Kul’s characters are quite intriguing in terms of overall comparison. Also, the film’s romantic setting falls flat. The movie’s finale is heartbreaking, causing the audience to cry and tear up. The film gives voice to many unseen women who are forced to suffer as a result of a lack of education and an unusual environment. As a filmmaker, we hope that Laxman Subedi can provide wonderful movies to Nepalese audiences shortly.

Movie Verdict

Satidevi is a simple film that depicts the plight of an underprivileged woman living in rural Nepal. Women in patriarchal societies are stuck by poor norms and ideals, so they endure instead of living. Satidevi is a social drama movie that you can appreciate.
